On the east of Lake Turkana, the trek from Ileret went on to Loiyangalani; where the Rendille, Samburu, ELmolo, Turkana and Somali communities joined hands in condemning the government of acting irresponsibly in undertaking silent deals without putting any thought into the communities and how they manage their limited resources. While in Lodwar people gathered from kalokol,Kerio, South Turkana and the residents of Lodwar, Turkana's and non-Turkana's, fishermen and traders, to the mama's that prepare the fish, markets were closed as we all got together to pass a message. " We know the Political deals you are making, we do not want those Political Deals".
Communities across the lake had placards with the words; "If Mau is not a Political issue and is environment, where is PM Raila Odinga?'. "Is Vision 2030 to make Turkana for refugees?". " Lake Turkana is our water tower just like Mau is your water tower".
When political deals fail, and the hydrpower brings harm more than good, who will be blamed or will it be another of the Northern Kenya massacres; Issues swept under the carpet. "
We are here and we will fight to the last breathe. We thank all the media houses for their support in highlighting the issues at hand. We thank those who were there in person and in spirit.
This is not a fight for Turkana or Rendille, or Dassanach, or Elmolo only, it is a fight for Kenya, for environment, for sense. It is a fight not just for us, but for generations to come, for our children and their children. May the powers that be, get some sense from our cries and pleas and look at the facts and stop creating their own facts. Conserve Lake Turkana and if you cant conserve it, leave it as it is.
