As an organization, we stand firmly with the Uyombo community in Kilifi County, as they oppose the establishment of a Sh500 billion nuclear power plant by the Nuclear Power and Energy Agency (NuPEA). The people of Uyombo, and indeed the entire Kilifi county, have a fundamental right to Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC) regarding developments that affect their land and livelihoods.
Nuclear power, with its significant environmental and health risks, is not the solution for Uyombo. We must prioritize community-endorsed alternatives that align with the rights and wishes of local communities, and that respect their right to a safe, healthy environment and their right to say NO!
